Alexandre Brongniart was a French chemist, mineralogist, and zoologist, who collaborated with Georges Cuvier on a study of the geology of the region around Paris. He was the son of the architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart and father of the botanist Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart.
Christian Andreas Victor Hensen was a German zoologist. He coined the term plankton and laid the foundation for biological oceanography. Hensen was born in the town of Schleswig. He studied medicine at the universities of Würzburg, Berlin and Kiel. In 1859, he received his doctorate in Kiel for a thesis on epilepsy and urinary secretions.
Sir Charles Wyville Thomson FRSE FRS FLS FGS FZS was a Scottish natural historian and marine zoologist. He served as the chief scientist on the Challenger expedition; his work there revolutionised oceanography and led to his knighthood.
