The penal colony of Cayenne, commonly known as Devil's Island, was a French penal colony that operated in the 19th and 20th century in the Salvation's Islands of French Guiana.

The Salvation's Islands are a group of small islands of volcanic origin about 11 kilometres off the coast of French Guiana, 14 kilometres north of Kourou, in the Atlantic Ocean. Although closer to Kourou, the islands are part of Cayenne commune, specifically Cayenne 1?? Canton Nord-Ouest.

Saint Joseph Island, is the southernmost island of the three Salvation's Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of French Guiana. Twenty hectares in size, it is the middle in size. During the period when the islands were used as a penal colony, the island was reserved for solitary confinement.

Guiana Amazonian Park is the largest National Park of France, aiming at protecting part of the Amazonian forest located in French Guiana. It is the largest park in the European Union, and one of the largest national parks in the world.
