Stanislav Stanislavovich Shushkevich is a Belarusian politician and scientist. From September 28, 1991 to January 26, 1994, he was the first leader and head of state of independent Belarus after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Uladzimir Karatkievich was a Belarusian romantic writer. Karatkievich was born in 1930 in Orsha, Vitebsk region. In 1954, he graduated from the Philological Department of Kiev University and taught first in a village school in the Kiev region of Ukraine and then in his home town, Orsha.
